Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Dr. Sher Singh Lidder

Dr. Sher Singh Lidder was born on 13-08-1897 in Punjab. After he arrived in Andaman, he joined the Andaman Medical Department on 14th April 1938 as Assistant Surgeon. He was posted at the Hospital of Ross Island (now renamed Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island). Later he was posted at Middle Point, Port Blair.  

He joined the Indian Independence League (IIL) in 1942 and was elected as Executive Member of the IIL. Due to their efforts, a huge amount was collected from the local people which was donated to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose during his visit to the Andaman in December 1943. On 27 October 1944, he was arrested and imprisoned in the Cellular Jail. During his imprisonment, he received inhuman and barbaric torture. On 30 January 1944, He was shot dead by the Japanese Firing Squad and buried in an ‘L’ shaped mass grave with 43 others in a row at Homfraygunj in South Andaman. A memorial ‘Balidan Vedi’ has been erected in memory of them at the spot where they got martyrdom.
