Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Sahib Singh, son of Lall Singh was born in 1916 in Punjab. He arrived in Andaman to join his father. He was a reputed Hockey player in the islands. He was elected as an Executive Member of the Indian Independence League (IIL). Due to their effort, a huge amount was collected from the local people which was donated to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose during his visit to the Andaman in December 1943. On 12 January 1944, he was arrested and imprisoned in the Cellular Jail. During his imprisonment, he received inhuman and barbaric torture. On 30 January 1944, He was shot dead by the Japanese Firing Squad and buried in an ‘L’ shaped mass grave with 43 others in a row at Homfraygunj in South Andaman. A memorial ‘Balidan Vedi’ has been erected in memory of them at the spot where they got martyrdom.
