Raj Ratan Dass, son of Kishen Dass of Aberdeen was born on 01-07-1916. He was employed as Assistant Jailor at Port Blair.
In May 1942, he joined the Indian Independence League (IIL) and in October-November 1943 he was arrested and imprisoned in the Cellular Jail. During his imprisonment, he received inhuman and barbaric torture. His wife was also arrested to keep emotional pressure on him. She was released later. On 30 January 1944, Raj Ratan Dass was shot dead by the Japanese squad and buried in an ‘L’ shaped mass grave with 43 others in a row at Homfraygunj in South Andaman. A memorial ‘Balidan Vedi’ has been erected in memory of them at the spot where they got martyrdom.
