Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Ratan Chand, son of Roop Chand of Junglighat was born on 08-02-1915. He was employed in the Settlement Office as a Clerk on 25th May 1936. He was a reputed sportsman too.

In April 1942, he joined the Indian Independence League (IIL) and from October-November 1943 he was arrested and imprisoned in the Cellular Jail. During his imprisonment, he received inhuman and barbaric torture. On 30 January 1944, he was shot dead by the Japanese squad and buried in an ‘L’ shaped mass grave with 43 others in a row at Homfraygunj in South Andaman. A memorial ‘Balidan Vedi’ has been erected in memory of them at the spot where they got martyrdom.
