Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Kaur Singh Chawla, son of Bhagwan Dass and younger brother of Pokhar Singh was brought from Punjab to Andaman as a convict on transportation. He was a businessman. He joined the Indian Independence League (IIL) and was elected as Executive Member of the IIL. He was arrested on 12 January 1944 and interned in the Cellular Jail. During his imprisonment, he received inhuman torture. On 30 January 1944, he was shot dead by the Japanese Firing Squad and buried in an ‘L’ shaped mass grave with 43 others at Homfraygunj in South Andaman. A memorial ‘Balidan Vedi’ has been erected in memory of them at the spot where they got martyrdom.
