Name of Jaswant Singh inscribed on the Homfraygunj Martyrs Memorial “Balidan Vedi”

Jaswant Singh, son of Chattar Pal was born in 1908 in United Province. He belonged to the Bhantu community and settled at Ferrargunj in South Andaman. In the islands, he served as Compounder.

In April 1942 he joined the Indian Independence League (IIL). He was arrested and interned in the Cellular Jail. During his imprisonment, he received inhuman torture. On 30 January 1944, he was shot dead by the Japanese Firing Squad and buried in an ‘L’ shaped mass grave with 43 others at Homfraygunj in South Andaman. A memorial ‘Balidan Vedi’ has been erected in memory of them at the spot where they got martyrdom.
