Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

H. Rahalkar, son of Haribabu was born on 18th July 1909 in village Menseni in Maharashtra. In Andaman, he was working as an Engineer in the WIMCO FACTORY. After the Japanese occupation, in April 1942 he joined the Indian Independence League (IIL) and was elected as an Executive Member of the League, and in this capacity, he worked as Joint Secretary (Propaganda) of the IIL. He was arrested and interned in the Cellular Jail. During his imprisonment, he received inhuman torture. On 30 January 1944, he was shot dead by the Japanese Firing Squad and buried in an ‘L’ shaped mass grave with 43 others at Homfraygunj in South Andaman. A memorial ‘Balidan Vedi’ has been erected in memory of them at the spot where they got martyrdom. After his death, his wife Vimla Rahalkar established a school at Ambernath in Maharashtra.
