Lakhan Singh

Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh

March 28, 2024 to March 28, 2025

Lakhan Singh was born in 1904 in Rooppur Village, post: Saman, Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh. His father Baldev Singh, raised him in their native village where he received his primary education.

Inspired by the ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave, he actively participated in the Quit India Movement. On 8 August 1942, when Gandhi ji proclaimed the resolution of the Quit India Movement during the Bombay session with the slogan "Karo Ya Maro" (Do or Die), he fervently joined the cause, urging others to follow suit. As a consequence, he was arrested and sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment in Mainpuri Jail, enduring the cruelty and oppression inflicted by British authorities. After independence, he engaged in social activities.

In recognition of his significant and dignified contributions to the freedom movement, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi conferred upon him a Tamra Patra on behalf of the nation in 1972.

Lakhan Singh passed away on 10 December 1981, at his residence in Mainpuri district, Uttar Pradesh. His legacy continues to be honoured and commemorated in the annals of history, serving as a testament to his unwavering commitment to the nation's struggle for independence.
