Indra Singh Topwal

Chamoli, Uttarakhand

March 28, 2024 to March 28, 2025

Indra Singh Topwal was born in the quaint village of Didoli, nestled within the Gwar Block of Karanprayag, Tehsil Karanprayag District Chamoli, Uttarakhand. His father was Sher Singh Topwal. Sher Singh envisioned sending his son, Indra to enlist in the Azad Hind Fauj.

At the age of sixteen, Indra, armed with his parents' blessings, embarked on his journey. In 1937, he made his way to Pathankot, where he encountered a British military officer recruiting labour for cargo ships bound for Japan. Seizing the opportunity, Indra ventured forth, arriving in Japan in 1940 amidst the throes of conflict between Japan and America.

In Japan, heeding Subhas Chandra Bose's call to join the Azad Hind Fauj, Indra readily enlisted as a freedom fighter. He valiantly partook in battles across Rangoon, South Korea and Austria, demonstrating unwavering commitment to the cause of India's emancipation. In 1957, after years of service abroad, Indra returned to his homeland, settling back into the tranquil rhythms of village life.

Embracing the mantle of a social reformer, Indra dedicated himself to guiding the youth towards national service, emphasizing the significance of sacrifice for the nation's greater good.
