Madhav Ramchandra Landage

Madhav Ramchandra Landage was born at Rajapur in Sangamner, Ahmednagar district. He was educated till the fourth gradeand harbored a fervent desire to serve his country during the Chale Jav movement of 1942 in Sangamner, Ahmednagar district. With many freedom fighters from Sangamner, including Madhav, enduring imprisonment, the call for liberation remained strong even after India gained independence in 1947.

In July 1955, under the guidance of Bhaskarnana Durve, Madhav, along with his comrades Ramesh Saraf, Gujar, Nirhali, Palande, Nighute, Gosavi, and others, joined a contingent from Sangamner to participate in the Goa Mukti Movement. Registering at the Goa Vimochan Assistant Committee in Pune, they received certificates for their participation. Traversing through Belgaum amidst heavy rain and mud, Madhav and his companions embarked on a gruelling 29-mile journey on foot to reach Surle village in Portuguese territory. On 15 August1955, they commenced satyagraha, facing gunfire from Portuguese soldiers. Despite injuries and arrests, the resolve of the satyagrahis remained steadfast. Madhav Landage endured severe beatings from Portuguese police, sustaining serious injuries. After receiving temporary treatment at the Goa Vimochan Medical Health Camp and Belgaum Hospital, he returned to Sangamner. His bravery was recognized by the Maharashtra government, which honored him with a certificate of honor for his participation in the Goa Liberation Movement.
