Indra Singh

Chamoli, Uttarakhand

March 28, 2024 to March 28, 2025

Indra Singh was born in Silangi Gairsain, nestled in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand, his parents were Daulat Singh and Parwati Devi. However, in their remote village, options for education were scarce. Despite this, Daulat Singh was determined to provide his son with an education. He received an informal education at home.

Indra's longing to serve in the army led him to repeatedly urge his father to speak to the British police officer for an opportunity. Eventually, due to his exemplary care for the officer's sick wife, he was taken under the wing of the officer and sent to Bombay. From there, he embarked on a journey that led him to join the British army in Singapore in 1894.

His heart remained tethered to his motherland and witnessing the unjust actions of the British authorities during a protest in Singapore stirred a deep resolve within him. He decided to sever ties with the British army, but the path to returning to India eluded him until he heard Subhas Chandra Bose's call to join the Azad Hind Fauj in 1942.

Leaving behind his tenure in the British army, Indra Singh fled to Japan and enlisted in the Azad Hind Fauj, where he fought valiantly against the Chinese and Korean armies. aOn 3 June 1974, he finally returned home. In his retirement, he established a small educational centre in their village, where he imparted English language skills to enable a better understanding of government communications.
