Madanchand Kishanchand Mehta

Madanchand Kishanchand Mehta was born on 15 November 1915. He lived in Umbargaon. He belonged to a farmingfamily. He used to live in the Bordi area. He was impressed by Gandhian Thought and was active in the freedom struggle. The whole Mehta family took an active part in the freedom struggle led by Gandhiji.

In 1942 Madanchand started participating in the Quit India movement. He was one of the prominent activists in Bordi village. Acharya Bhise was leading the Quit India movement at Bordi. Acharya Bhise was arrested on 14 August 1942. The Ahmedabad passenger carrying him was vandalized at Gholwad station. People were gathered in huge numbers at Gholwad station. Mehata was also there with the crowd. The crowd was very angry and stopped the train for a few hours. After the request of Acharya Bhise, the train left. But the police arrived. Madanchand Mehta was at the station at that time. He was immediately arrested by the police, charged with assault, and sent to Thane Central Jail for nine months. A case was filed against them. The punishment for this crime was death. Therefore, Mr. Mehta had to go through great hardships and finally, he was acquitted of these cases. Even after acquittal, he was reinstated.

After his release from imprisonment, Mehta used to serve the tribal along with his brother Mohanlal Mehta. He took an active part in the Hyderabad Liberation War at Latur. He remained a khadi wearer all his life. People here knew him as an activist who fought against injustice.

Madanchand Kishanchand died on 3 August 1994.
