G. Valli

Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu

March 28, 2024 to March 28, 2025

G. Valli, born in the village of Moovanallur in the Thiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu, was the wife of Govinda Swamy. She later relocated to Malaysia, where she settled. In 1943, when Subhas Chandra Bose sought support from the Japanese for the formation of the Indian National Army to combat British rule, the Japanese turned over Prisoners of War to Subhas Chandra Bose. This included individuals recruited by Rash Bihari Bose in various Southeast Asian countries. In light of this, she enlisted in the Indian National Army under the leadership of Subhas Chandra Bose in the Far East. She served as a Nursing Sepoy (Registration No. 26859) in the Rani of Jhansi regiment, beginning in 1944 in Penang, Malaya, after receiving training at the Indian Association Camp in Penang.

During the 1945 expedition against the British, G. Valli courageously served on the front lines with the Rani of the Jhansi regiment. However, she was subsequently arrested and detained in the Penang detention camp for approximately one week. In recognition of her significant contributions to the national movement, the Government of Tamil Nadu acknowledged her sacrifice and granted her a pension.

Pension document issued by Government of Tamil Nadu in 1968.
