The Residency at Lucknow was set up after the Battle of Buxar, in which the third Nawab of Awadh had formed an alliance with the then Nawab of Bengal and Mughal Emperor Shah Alam against the British East India Company and lost. The British then appointed their representative who was known as the Resident General and the complex that housed his residence and office as the ‘Residency’.

The Residency remains a silent witness to the Revolt of 1857. It served as the residence for the British Resident General who was a representative in the court of the Nawab. During the Mutiny of 1857, the British were attacked by the Indian freedom fighters in the Official Building – Residency in the month of June. Residency compound also has a cemetery with the graves of 2000 British soldiers who were killed during the battle of 1857. It has a museum which preserves ancient records and serves as a government office. The structure of the Tomb of Sadat Ali Khan, the Nawab of Awadh is also present here. The place brings British tourists whose ancestors are buried here and the Indians recalling the struggle for Independence.
