The Cellular Jail Hunger Strike of 1933

Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar Islands

January 25, 2022

The cause of the hunger strike was inhuman conditions prevailing inside the jail and demand for deportation back to the mainland. Freedom fighters who protested by going on hunger strike were killed through force-feeding. To cover up their inhuman treatment, British doctors would not record the real reason for death; ‘force feeding’, in the medical certificate. In the case of Mahavir Singh, the British wrote ‘shock’ as the reason for death while for Mohit Mitra and Mohan Kishore, the reason mentioned was Pneumonia.
