Krishnamohan Chakraborty

Purba Medinipur (East Medinipur), West Bengal

May 03, 2024 to May 03, 2026

Krishnamohan Chakraborty, a valiant soldier of India's struggle for independence, was born in 1918 into a humble Brahmin family in the village of Basudebpur, located within the Egra police station jurisdiction in undivided Medinipur district. His parents, Radhamohan Chakraborty and Swarnamayi Devi, instilled in him a fervent desire to liberate his motherland from the shackles of oppression from an early age.

Under the guidance of Pandit Rameshchandra Panchatirtha at the esteemed Darshan Chatushpathi in Garbasudebpur, he excelled in his studies and earned the revered title of Kavyatirtha. Subsequently, he assumed the role of Head Pandit at the Bhimeshwari Lower Secondary School.

Parallel to his academic pursuits, Krishnamohan Chakraborty ardently participated in the Swadeshi movement, dedicated to promoting indigenous goods and boycotting foreign products. When Mahatma Gandhi sounded the clarion call for the Quit India Movement in 1942, Krishnamohan fervently rallied to the cause.

The pivotal moment arrived on 29 September 1942 when, under the leadership of figures like Dhirendranath Das and Hrishikesh Gayen, Krishnamohan Chakraborty joined a procession aimed at capturing the Bhagwanpur police station in broad daylight. Amidst the procession, chaos erupted as constables Sudhanshu Dasgupta and Amulya Ghoshal indiscriminately opened fire on the peaceful marchers. Krishnamohan, valiantly leading the crowd, was tragically struck down by a bullet, falling into a nearby pond where he succumbed to his injuries. His sacrifice was not in vain, as his bravery inspired not only his fellow freedom fighters in Medinipur but also those in Bhagwanpur.

The name of Krishnamohan Chakraborty is mentioned in Bhupatinagar Shaheed Smriti Stambh.
